Scan-to-BIM and Design Development for Hansens Palæ in Copenhagen
BIM model of Hansens Palæ, a listed neoclassical town mansion in central Copenhagen completed in 1835. Built from a point cloud and historical drawings, with the facade details, joinery and the new layout by Leif Jørgensen Architects modelled into it.

The challenge
Hansens Palæ is a neoclassical town mansion in Frederiksstaden, central Copenhagen, completed in 1835 and protected as cultural heritage. Leif Jørgensen Architects were preparing its renovation: new functions inside, while the historic fabric stays. Part of the interior is authentic, and the scan alone did not give everything the design needed. The team needed one model that holds both the building as it stands and the new design.
Our solution
We started from the point cloud and modelled the building at LOD 200 for volumes and geometry. Historical drawings filled the gaps in the scan: we scaled them, checked them against the point cloud and used them to position elements more precisely. Cornices, friezes, window frames and doors were rebuilt from the drawings and fitted into the real geometry. The windows, doors and mouldings planned for restoration were detailed further, part of them as parametric families. Into this model we brought the new layout by Leif Jørgensen Architects: replanning, structural changes and facades, so the effect of each change on the historic structure could be checked in the model.
Results
- Model of the building from a point cloud, from LOD 200 up to interior reconstruction
- Historic cornices, friezes, windows and doors rebuilt from old drawings, part of them as parametric families
- New layout and structural changes modelled against the existing building
